1. PREPARE YOUR WRISTS

Warming up the wrists and preparing them to bear weight is essential.

When you’re standing on your hands, your wrists are your ankles!

Consider warm ups that flex, extend and circle the wrists, and actions that wake up your fingers and palms!

Try these three game changing wrist warm ups!

  • Flicky Flicky: Pretend you’ve just washed your hands, and there’s no towel to dry them on! Flick your fingers vigorously (not your wrists!) and imagine you were flicking the water off your wet hands. This heats up your finger extensor muscles and your finger flexor muscles!

  • Popeye: Imagine you wanted to show your biceps off to the judges at Ms/Mr Universe! Bring your arms out at shoulder height and bend your elbows. Squeeze your fists and pull your fists in towards your shoulders, and then in towards your biceps. Slowly begin to straighten your arms, keeping the fists pulled in, looking for a sensation of stretch in your forearms.

  • Making Biscuits: Come to hands and knees on your mat. Knead your mat like you were making dough - drag your fingertips along the floor to create friction between your fingers and your mat. You might even hear your mat squeak!
