Balancing on your hands is not about strength, flexibility, fitness or age.

#1: TECHNIQUE


This is the REQUIREMENT for arm balancing.
Most yoga classes and online tutorials skip over the CRUCIAL mechanics of balance. So people try to arm balance like this, and then wonder why they can only hold it for 1 or 2 seconds (if at all).Β 


Your center of gravity has to be stacked over your base (your hands) in order to get into and hold a pose - and knowing how to do that starts with understanding the balance point of each pose and where to put your body parts before you even begin to try to balance.

Without that, it feels heavy and hard because
you’re fighting gravity the whole time. If you have to muscle your way into a pose, there's something missing in your mechanics.

When you "Stack Your Shit" properly, gravity works for you! Get your body parts into the right position, lean past the β€œOh Shit” point, apply your anti-faceplant braking system and your toes lift off the ground by themselves - like magic!

#2: PREPARATION


After a few sun salutations, the teacher calls out....

β€œOkay now, Side Crow! Put your hands here, thighs here,
now lift your toes!”  

And you're like "WTF, why won't my body twist like that?"


It will.Β  You just haven't given it what it needs to be successful!

Unless you're one of the lucky few with natural gymnastics ability (which is not most of us), you probably aren't prepared for the arm balances and inversions you're practicing.

If you're sneaking in 5 minutes of handstand kickups or your side crow practice at the end of a sweaty yoga class.... or pulling up a tutorial on YouTube after going for a run, that's part of your problem.

Unless you are warming up the exact muscles you need for the pose(s) you're practicing, in the exact way that you need to use them, you're missing the mind-muscle connection, which just means.....struggle. πŸ₯΅

The best way to ensure success each time you practice is toΒ

Practicing these poses (and their warmups!) CREATES any strength you might be missing!

Doing a bunch of push-ups to "get stronger" makes you really good at push-ups, not arm balances.

(Pro tip: you don’t actually need to be able to do a full push-up to arm balance! The mechanics are different! 🀯🀯)

If all it took was strength, athletes, bodybuilders and experienced yogis everywhere would be able to fly easily.... but they can't.

That’s because strength isn’t as important as you think. Mechanics and structure win out over strength, all day every day!

I've been teaching people all over the world to stand on their hands and upside down since 2015. My favorite thing in the world (other than my cats and iced coffee) is watching my students go from "I can't do that" to "holy crap I did it!!" after a few personalized instructions.
